Dear Haverim,
Shana Tova! Our High Holiday video can be viewed through this link at https://vimeo.com/860847711/48808f548f?share=copy; however, if you prefer to read it, here it is below:
Ruti and I are looking forward to seeing all of you at High Holiday services. This is a wonderful time of year when we make a pivotal transition in our lives from the old year to the new one, from regret to hope, from loss to celebration and from dreams unfulfilled to new visions of what our lives can be.
Soon, we will hear the sounds of multiple shofarot, see old friends and meet new ones, kvell over our Young Cantors, be uplifted by the lovely voice of our Cantor and the incredible music of our band. We will be moved by hearing familiar prayers and modern readings, and we will be reminded of how important Judaism can be in our lives, and how important we can be in the lives of others, doing the work of Tikkun Olam – improving the world.
We’ll gather to taste challah and honey, to touch the Torah and, at our concluding Havdalah service, smell the sweet spices of a new year full of possibility and renewal.
All of our senses will be heightened throughout the High Holidays, as we celebrate with joy, study Torah, and engage in our annual promise to ourselves to leave regret behind, seek forgiveness from others, and become the best human beings that we can be.
Let’s celebrate the High Holidays together!
Shana Tova,
Rabbi Arnie Rachlis

About Rabbi Arnie Rachlis
Rabbi Arnold Rachlis has been the spiritual leader of University Synagogue since 1991, guiding us since 1987 from a small havurah looking for a more modern approach to Judaism to a 600+ families center for dynamic and innovative Judaism. He leads with a focus on a humanistic philosophy that sees God not as a supreme being, but as inspiration, creativity, conscience, consciousness and motivating us toward human growth and social justice. Rabbi Rachlis has created a joyous environment which affirms individuality and is inclusive – men and women, gay and straight, Jewishly learned and not, Jewish and not Jewish – welcoming all to learn, explore and connect at University Synagogue.
