The People vs. Abraham: A Trial
|
The "almost sacrifice" of Isaac by Abraham, that some say was the "attempted murder" of Isaac by Abraham, is one of the foundational events of our Jewish heritage, and likely its most controversial. Were Abraham's actions holy? Was he abusive? Delusional? Inspired? What about Sarah's rights? What about Isaac's rights? What did Abraham know? In an extraordinary afternoon of learning and live courtroom dramatics, we will explore Abraham's "guilt" or "innocence" as we grapple with eternally relevant issues of morality, duty, faith, devotion, indeed, of the very nature of Judaism itself. You will enter "the courtroom" for a mock trial as prominent litigators Jonathan Shapiro and Erwin Chemerinsky argue the case before Judge Joseph Wapner. And then, ladies and gentlemen of the jury - you shall cast your votes.

This truth that lifelong moral education is the paramount religious duty of the human being is far-reaching enough to constitute a world mission. No one takes us seriously when we boast that we are entrusted with the mission to teach righteousness. But if we were to adopt as our mission the learning of righteousness, we would, no doubt, render a much-needed service to the cause of civilization. - Mordecai Kaplan
